Scientist's Refuge

A retreat for a bivalve scientist.

The Scientist’s Refuge consists of a small pavilion and a research dock. The pavilion combines a cabin for a bivalve scientist with a shelter for park visitors. In the tidal flats, the dock supports the scientist’s research on how clam populations can be used to purify water contaminated by the nearby West Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The horizontal datum of the water’s surface separates land from sea. Likewise, in the pavilion, a horizontal datum separates public from private. The pavilion’s stainless steel columns are skewed as if refracted by the polished ceiling they support.
